There are legendary bands, and then there is Aerosmith. It was a bit of a surreal beginning. I met the entire band at a small restaurant — ALL of them were sitting there as I walked in. It was crazy. The project was intense, thanks to Steven Tyler, who to this day is one of my favorite artists I have worked with. So playful and free-spirited, his energy completely infectious. This resulted in more comps than I’ve ever created for an artist. For weeks we were working with three different titles until I finally told him to choose one. One day, I found a book on Sorayama and felt his work would be spot on. Steven agreed. From there came the whole 80’s graphics feel. Different for them. Different for me. It worked well. That willingness to take risks—Steven’s drive to push into the unexpected—meant I had to keep shifting my own approach just to keep pace. Sometimes it feels like that’s the trick with any creative collaboration: knowing when to change gears and try something you’d never thought of before.
