This ended up being an unusual package, especially considering the client. Madonna was shooting a Gap commercial with Missy Elliot on a movie lot. In this scene, there was a lot going on in the background while she was performing — including the sudden appearance of two martians. I really liked this photo from the shoot. This was one of the covers I presented. I designed it with no name or title on the cover, so the focus was entirely on the image. I was surprised Madonna chose it. I mean she looks great, of course, but it’s the martians that steal the show for me. I wonder who was in those suits and how surprised they must have been to see themselves on a Madonna cover.
